Where will your next trip to Russia take you?

Whether you’re arriving in Russia by air from the US, train from Europe, or even a cruise ship into Saint Petersburg, you should know the visas available to you. Normally US citizens have to apply for a Russian visa before they land in Moscow, but there are some special circumstances for Russia transit visas. Do any of these apply to you?

72 hours in Russia

Though it’s technically possible to only have 72 hours using any form of transport, this is most commonly used in airports. Travelers transiting to another country are allowed access to Russia for a few days with a transit visa. If you’re not even planning to leave the airport and your flight is within 24 hours, you still have to get a Russia transit visa.

For three days, US citizens can visit certain areas in Russia without the typical tourist visa restrictions. However, it’s important to note that it’s generally expected you will remain close to your port of embarkation. In other words, if you arrive in Saint Petersburg, don’t expect officials to take kindly to you driving to Moscow.

Can I stay even longer on a Russia transit visa?

Yes, you can! The 72-hour restriction is limited to flights and some ferries, but travelers arriving by car or rail generally receive a ten-day transit visa. The bad news is even if you’re simply transiting for under 24 hours and don’t plan to leave the airport, you will need to apply for a Russia transit visa in advance. This means a lot of paperwork and a lot of hassle.

Travel Visa Pro assists all travelers with Russia transit visas. Rather than forcing you to show up in person at a Russian embassy or consulate and fill out all the forms yourself, TVP has you covered. Our team of Russian visa travel experts can make the application process painless and fast.
